about
This piece was created as a final project in a class I took.
With this track I aimed to create the soundtrack (or a portion of a soundtrack) to a non-existent 80s horror film. These are among my favorite movies, and I find their soundtracks, particularly the soundtracks of John Carpenter, to be iconic in my mind, and as such I drew heavy inspiration from his work. In my mind, the film I was creating the soundtrack for is titled Deus Est Machina, or “God is a Machine” in Latin. The concept I had of the film was that it would be an 80s horror film that was thematically more similar to 90s cyberpunk works, such as Ghost in the Shell, the Matrix, or Serial Experiments Lain. I had this idea that the film would be about a cyberweapon or a virus created by the US government that breaks out of containment somehow, and digitizes people, removing them from the physical realm, and transporting them into a digital realm where this virus is a god, hence the title. The piece I composed would be the main theme of the film, played during the opening credits.
One other point of note is that I wanted this piece to sound like it had been rotting on a VHS tape for years and years. To make it sound that way, I purchased a couple cassette tapes and a cheap tape recorder, and transferred all the individual tracks to tape, then digitized them. This results in a rather lo-fi sound which I personally love, and I think it adds a sense of “authenticity” to the piece.
